Imagine that you are trying to cross a fast flowing river, there are three bridges that you can cross: a old tattered rope bridge, on old wooden bridge, and a sturdy steel bridge with strong foundations. Which one will you choose? The steel one, right? Broadly speaking, Engineering is the method we humans use to minimise physical risk. Although this isn’t always as clear-cut as it would seem. Let’s imagine that the old tattered rope bridge is right in front of you, the old wooden bridge is 10 km away and the steel bridge is 100km away. Now what bridge do you choose? That answer is probably swayed by the way you perceive the risk of getting injured and wet.
