Should I Seal 'SIS'

An online sealing forecasting tool ‘Should I Seal’ has been developed by Road Science (a science-based collaboration with MetService) to provide Downer chip sealing workers with clear advice on when and where they are able to spray bitumen emulsion to prevent the risk of wash-off from a rain event.

The forecasting tool allows chip sealing teams to be able to login to a platform on their PCs, smartphones or tablets.  Once logged in they are taken to an interface with simple icons showing whether or not it is safe to seal on a particular day. Factors taken into account include product type, humidity, temperature and rain forecasts.

The weather forecasting intelligence provided to Road Science enables customers to plan with a high-level of accuracy when environmental conditions will enable the successful application of their emulsified products.

This collaboration removes the last remaining potential risk in undertaking Road Science bitumen emulsion sealing within New Zealand. It provides the contractor, road controlling authorities and environmental protection agencies with increased confidence in the use of bitumen emulsions for the chip sealing of their networks.

With so much innovation underway, education is an important part of the new Road Science service.  It’s not just about teaching people how to use these products – we need to take everyone back to the basic science involved. It’s all part of the recipe that will give New Zealand a network of better, more cost-effective roads.
